Ms. Torres began working on toxic tort cases in 1977 when she served as senior attorney in charge of Fibreboard Corporations's defense in Northern California asbestos litigation. She was responsible for hiring, training and supervising all attorneys, paralegals and staff defending Fibreboard. In the mid-1980's she was part of the defense team who were instrumental in developing and drafting the original General Orders for asbestos cases in San Francisco, Alameda and Solano counties. She was lead counsel for Fibreboard (and co-defendants) in all coordinated non-medical discovery, and lead counsel for Fibreboard in all court appearances. She has evaluated and settled thousand s of asbestos cases nationwide. Ms. Torres was second chair in the first asbestos case tried in Northern California—a defense verdict.
In 1984 Ms. Torres was recruited by the firm of Ropers Majeski Kohn Bentley & Wagner when that firm was substituted as counsel for Fibreboard Corporation. She continued in her role as lead attorney for Fibreboard's Northern California asbestos litigation defense. In 1985, she joined the firm of Brobeck Phleger & Harrison when Fibreboard became a member of the Asbestos Claims Facility. Her role expanded to coordinating the litigation nationwide with the representation of the ACF. Ms. Torres has significant experience in implementing strategy, coordinating discovery, and case management for clients involved in national litigation. In addition, she has conducted numerous expert and fact witness depositions, and prepared and defended corporate witnesses at deposition.
In 1990 she started her own firm, Joost & Torres, representing defendants in civil litigation throughout the greater Bay Area. She has also served as national administrator of an interim claims committee for a billion dollar asbestos trust. In her practice she has participated in over 200 mediations and arbitrations and has been involved in three jury trials. She joined the Firm as a partner in 2001. |
